  1. Brian Kernighan actually wrote the first "hello, world" program as part of the documentation for the BCPL programming language developed by Martin Richards. BCPL was used while C was being developed at Bell Labs a few years before the publication of Kernighan and Ritchie's C book in 1972.

    The genius that brought Hello World! to the programming space appears to be the one and only Brian Kernighan. It is unclear whether it was first used in the B Language or in BCPL (released 1967). It certainly was mentioned and had an appearance in both languages, however Brian didn't publicly mention it for quite some time after the BCPL release.
